Virtual Running Race FAQs
1. What is virtual running?
Virtual running is an event that you can complete from any location you choose, at your own pace, and at any time within a specified timeframe. Unlike a traditional race, there is no physical starting line or crowd of runners. You participate on your own schedule.
2. How does Runner's City's virtual race work?
You register online for a virtual race and receive a virtual bib and sometimes a welcome pack. You then complete the required distance on a route of your choosing, such as a local park, a treadmill, or your favourite running trail. Once you've finished, you submit your proof of completion online to receive your finisher's medal and other rewards.
3. Do I have to run the entire distance at once?
This depends on the specific race. Many virtual races allow you to accumulate your mileage over a period of time, such as a month. However, some are designed to be completed in a single effort, much like a traditional race. The rules will always be clearly stated.
4. How do I track my run?
Most participants use a GPS running app on their smartphone (like Strava, Runkeeper, or Nike Run Club) or a GPS watch (like a Garmin or Fitbit). For treadmill runs, a photo of the treadmill's dashboard is often acceptable as proof.
5. Do I get a medal or a t-shirt?
Take Part for Free or take part and receive a medal and/or a T-shirt. One of the great perks of virtual races is the finisher's package. You will typically receive a unique medal, and often a t-shirt, once you have submitted your proof of completion. These items are usually mailed to you directly.
6. When can I run the race?
Virtual races provide flexibility, so you can run on a date and time that is most convenient for you, as long as it's within the official event window (for example, anytime between September 1st and September 30th).
7. Are there time limits?
For virtual races that allow you to accumulate mileage over time, there is typically a deadline to submit your final results. For single-run virtual races, there is generally no cut-off time, allowing you to complete the distance at your own pace.
8. How do I submit my results?
Most race organisers will have a dedicated online portal or form on their website where you can upload a screenshot of your running app or a photo of your watch/treadmill screen that shows your time and distance.
9. Can I run with a group?
Absolutely! While you can run on your own, many people choose to run with friends or a local running club. This adds a social element and can make the experience even more fun.
10. What are the benefits of participating in a virtual race?
Virtual races are a fantastic way to stay motivated, set and achieve fitness goals, and earn some "bling" for your efforts. They are inclusive for people of all fitness levels and offer a way to participate in an event without the travel and time constraints of a traditional race. Many virtual races also support great charities and causes.
